At First Sight

The red man turns green.
I see you standing across the street.
Our eyes never meet.

We both enter the room
In the dark and the gloom
But our lives begin
The second we walk in.
It starts with a 'Hi,
Would you like me to buy
You a drink? I think
You're partial to wine?'
'White wine. Dry.'
'Ok. That's fine.'
I feel like I'm high.

There's colour erupting from the sound of your laughs.
I capture your face like a photograph.
Effortless grace. Not a trace
Of awkwardness when we're face to face.
But happiness fades. Glasses clink.
How much disappears in just one blink.
I open my eyes.
You're not by my side.
You're across the room
With a girl I knew.
You fit like a jigsaw.
You laugh so easily.
I join for a moment
But it just feels discordant.

We both leave the room
With the dark and the gloom
And once past the door,
It all seems heavier than before.

The red man turns green.
I cross the street.
Our lives never meet.

You're the best romance I dreamed I had.
You're the best romance I never had.
